Raleigh County idle coking coal mine reopens

Monday, 18 Jul 2011

A coal mine in Raleigh County that's been idle for more than 20 years has reopened.

The Affinity mine near Sophia began operations under new owner United Coal Co. The mine is expected to produce 1.4 million tonne of metallurgical coal a year and employ more than 250 workers.

United Coal's parent, Ukraine based mining and steel producer Metinvest, has invested more than USD 100 million to rehabilitate the mine, which closed in 1985.

Mr Michael Zervos president and CEO of United Coal said that the company also plans to open a coal mine in Randolph County.
