AHMEDABAD: India's first 6-stand continuous cold rolling mill for stainless steel that promises a ten-fold increase in production will be set in Ahmedabad. Similar mills have been installed in developed countries.
Varia Engineering Works, an Ahmedabad-based rolling mills manufacturing company, expects its stainless steel manufacturing capacity to rise up to 2 lakh tonne from the present 18,000 tonne per annum, once the new mills becomes operational.
The company is engaged in manufacturing of rolling mills, heavy duty gear box and ancillary items for 40 years and has diversified into stainless steel manufacturing. "We are setting up self fabricated plant at Kerala GIDC near Ahmedabad with investment of Rs 150 crore, which will start production this month. In India, reversible mills are in use where one needs to pass sheets multiple times, a process which is time-consuming. We have developed the six-stand continuous mill, which is used in some developed countries," said Varia Engineering Works director Himanshu Varia. Stainless steel manufacturing sees 3% wastage, but continuous cold rolling mills would bring it down to 2%, he added.
Indian Stainless Steel Development Authority (ISSDA), apex industry body, believes that total production in the country will be around four million tonne by the end of the year 2012 while consumption is estimated to be around 2.6-2.7 million tonne. The body recently said consumption will fall because of slowdown in infrastructure development. Jindal Stainless is currently doubling its capacity at Hisar plant to 1.5 million tonne and its 8 lakh tonne plant in Orissa is set to commence by August. Other leading producers like Salem Steel Plant (controlled by Steel Authority of India Ltd), Viraj Steel, Panchmahal Steel etc have also expansion plans, which will add 0.5 million tonne of accumulative capacity by the end of 2012.
India's current per capita consumption of stainless steel is 1.2 kg and industry believes that the consumption level will be doubled in next three to five years. "There will be huge demand of stainless steel cold rolled coils and sheets for metro train coaches, railway wagons, roofing, kitchenware and automobile industry. Though, currently demand is lower, it will improve over 2-3 years. Export market too will push the demand up. Steel makers in developed countries will maintain their pursuit of a shift from volume to value, which will help manufacturers of developing countries. We expect that our turnover will reach Rs 400 crore by the end of current fiscal which was Rs 181 crore last year," Mr Varia said.
Experts believe China will continue to be competitive in global market. China produces 15 million tonne stainless steel of all grades and exports kitchenware to India in small quantities. Chinese products are 20% cheaper than Indian products.
