IBNS cited Mr Ganesan Natarajan Encore Coke Ltd President as saying that the merchant coke sector in eastern India is hopeful of riding the boom of steel production in the near future.
He said steel industries in India are largely dependant upon blast furnace method which requires coke, which India does not have in abundance.
Indian steel industries many of whom took their first steps in eastern India are all set to shift their base of operations to eastern India once again. While this is certainly great news as revenue and employment generation will only increase, the bottleneck appears to be dysfunctional condition of the coke production companies in West Bengal.
Thus it is only imperative that coke will be imported and because of West Bengal’s strategic location it has a distinct advantage over western states when it comes to the issue of importing coke from Australia- the largest global manufacturer of coke.
Keeping this in mind the coke industry sector on Bengal urges the new government to take short and long term steps in improving the production environment in Bengal. Measures like apprehending the coal mafias or improving the freight delivery system are thus of great importance.
The deficit of coke in eastern India alone for steel industries is likely to reach 20 million tonnes to 30 million tonnes which provides immense opportunity for West Bengal to seize in the near future. (sourced from IBNS)
