BMA mine strike delays coal production

Thursday, 11 Aug 2011

Three thousand workers have gone on strike at six BMA mines in Queenland's Bowen Basin. The protected action stoppages are expected to delay production and maintenance.

The CFMEU's Mr Steve Pearce said that unions have been trying to negotiate better conditions for employees for eight months. He said that "Most importantly, job security as well as that protection for employees who may or may not wish to work the extended rosters, so that there's protection for those that work and protection for those that don't want to work it and the appropriate rights and representation on the mine site."

BMA said that it's continuing to meet and negotiate with the unions and progress is being made. It says industrial action is unnecessary, is causing financial harm and doesn't help to finalise an agreement. Union representatives are meeting today in Rockhampton to discuss their next course of action and are scheduled to meet with BMA on August 18 and 19.
