Rio Tinto PLC said that it has handed out further contracts for construction of its new USD 1.2 billion Hope Downs 4 mine as it pushes ahead with plans to ramp up iron ore output to 333 million tonnes a year in 2015 from Western Australia's Pilbara region.
The Anglo Australian mining giant said it has given contracts worth about AUD 184 million (USD 191 million) to two joint ventures with indigenous Australians for work at the mine site, which will have an annual capacity of 15 million tonnes.
Rio said more than AUD 700 million has been awarded to Aboriginal contractors under its expansion program.
Leighton Holdings Ltd in a separate statement said its 75:25 joint venture with indigenous contractor Ngarda Civil & Mining Pty Ltd has received a AUD 104 contract for stripping earth, road-work, drainage and other earthworks at the site some 200 kilometers east of Tom Price.
