BHPB Queensland coal mines to be hit by strikes over weekend

Sunday, 14 Aug 2011

Dow Jones reported that BHP Billiton Limited's metallurgical coal operations in Australia's Queensland state will continue to be hit by rolling strikes over the weekend, although both sides in the ongoing labor dispute are set to continue bargaining for a new employment pact next week.

Mr Stephen Smyth district president of the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union, one of three unions jointly bargaining, said that members of three unions plan to stage shift long strikes at the Gregory Crinum and Blackwater mines that BHP owns with Mitsubishi Corporation.

Action by the workers last week included a picket line at the Saraji mine and a series of strikes were held through the week until early Tuesday across the companies' seven mines. Both sides are set to resume negotiations over a new employment deal for more than 3,000 workers less than half the total workforce at the mines for two days next week and again the week after.

Mr Smyth said that "We are looking at an escalation of the protected industrial action by all unions and we are hoping this continues to apply pressure on the BHP Mitsubishi Alliance."
