Engineering firm Downer EDI has secured a contract worth more than $400 million for work on Xstrata Coal's Ravensworth North coal project in the Hunter Valley of New South Wales.

Shares in Downer EDI were up 12 cents, or 3.18 per cent, at $3.89 at 1553 AEST.

The contract is for the development of a coal handling and preparation plant (CHPP), the company said in a statement on Tuesday.

"This two-year alliance contract follows the successful delivery of Xstrata's Mangoola CHPP in May this year," chief executive Grant Fenn said.

Mr Fenn said the project would secure more than 400 jobs in the Hunter Valley region.
