Reuters quoted company spokesman said Tokyo Electric Power Co has restarted the 600 megawatt No.5 coal-fired unit at its quake-hit Hirono plant, in a planned move to boost power supply for the peak summer demand season.
Tokyo Electric which is battling a radiation crisis at its Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant has said it will get the five-unit Hirono plant restarted by summer to make up for a fall in its nuclear power generation.
The spokesman said the No.5 unit was restarted on Wednesday. It will take time to restart the other four units, using crude and fuel oil, as they are more severely damaged. When the March 11 quake and tsunami hit northeastern Japan, the No 2 and No 4 units were in operation and the other three were off line. (sourced from Reuters)
