Newcastle thermal coal up to AUD 129 a tonne

Power station coal prices at Australia's Newcastle port, an Asian benchmark, rose 1.1% in the week ended January 7th 2011.


According to the globalCOAL NEWC Index, coal prices at the New South Wales port climbed to AUD 129.90 a tonne from AUD 128.50 the previous week.


Xstrata Plc, the world's largest exporter of power-station coal, BHP Billiton Ltd and Rio Tinto Group are among mining companies that ship coal through Newcastle.
