Baosteel raises some main steel product prices for Jan

Mon Dec 12, 2011

SHANGHAI Dec 12 (Reuters) - China's Baoshan Iron & Steel will raise prices for some main steel products for January bookings, the company said on Monday, signalling that steel demand may improve at the beginning of the new year.

The company plans to keep hot-rolled coil prices flat but will raise cold-rolled coil by 100 yuan per tonne ($16) and some electro galvanized steel prices by 100-200 yuan per tonne, after it cut main steel product prices by 200-300 yuan in December from November.

The firm, also known as Baosteel, is the country's biggest listed steelmaker and its pricing is often seen as a barometer of China's steel market. ($1 = 6.3647 Chinese yuan)

China steel mills raise Sept product prices as demand picks up

Tue Aug 16, 2011

* More steel mills follow Baosteel with similar price rises
* Steel demand to stay firm on solid economy growth
* Steel inventories down 3.24 pct in July from June
* Iron ore price up 1.5 pct in July (Adds CISA monthly report)

By Ruby Lian and Jacqueline Wong

SHANGHAI, Aug 16 (Reuters) - More of China's leading steel mills have decided to raise prices of their main products for September bookings, aiming to catch up with rising spot market prices and in anticipation of stronger demand next month.

Two leading mills, Wuhan Iron & Steel Co Ltd and Beijing Shougang Co Ltd , will raise September prices for their main flat steel products in the wake of a similar move by Baoshan Iron & Steel Co Ltd (Baosteel) last Friday to take advantage of growing demand.

"Price rises by steel mills reflect climbing prices in the spot market since the end of July as steel mills received strong bookings in August. Steel prices are expected to increase next month as traders and end users need to build up stocks as demand improves," said Bill Chen, a senior trader with Hong Kong-based Smart Timing Steel Ltd.

Baosteel, the country's biggest-listed steelmaker, said last Friday that it would raise prices for hot-rolled coil by 60 yuan ($9) per tonne and cold-rolled coil prices by 120 yuan per tonne for September, in line with market expectations.

Baosteel usually sets the tone in pricing direction for the domestic steel market, followed by domestic rivals.

Wuhan Steel, the country's third-largest producer, plans to raise hot-rolled coil prices by 100 yuan per tonne and cold-rolled coil prices by 120 yuan per tonne, respectively, in line with Baosteel's increases.

Shougang will lift cold-rolled coil prices by 50 yuan per tonne, but has yet to make a decision on hot-rolled coil.

Another major mill, Angang Steel Co Ltd is expected to announce new prices later this week.

STEEL DEMAND TO REMAIN STRONG

Steel demand in China is expected to remain robust as the world's second-largest economy aims to maintain strong growth boosted by its continued investment in urbanisation and industrialisation, the China Iron & Steel Association (CISA) said on Tuesday.

"The engine driving up China's economic growth will still be powerful due to rapid investment growth, which will support steel demand in the near future," CISA said in a monthly report published on its website.

CISA also expects that China's steel exports will continue to stay relatively high, supporting steel demand.

China's economy would grow 9.2 percent in the third quarter, slightly down from the first two quarters of the year, a think tank under China's National Development and Reform Commission, the economic planning agency, said in a report.

Inventories of five main steel products - hot-rolled coil, cold-rolled coil, plate, wire rod and rebar - fell for the fourth straight month by 3.24 percent to 13.85 million tonnes in 26 major cities by end of July from the previous month.

"Large-scale construction of social housing and water conservancy as well as railway projects will continue to boost demand for construction steel products, while flat steel product mills will face growing competition as its end users including shipbuilding, auto and machinery see slower growth," CISA said.

Data from the report also showed that rebar spot prices rose 0.85 percent at end July from a month ago, wire rod price gained 1.51 percent and hot-rolled coil price rose 0.43 percent during the same period, while almost all other flat steel products fell modestly in July.

"Chinese steel mills will still face high production costs in the near future, narrowing the room for prices to fall in a large way," CISA added.

Prices of spot iron ore gained 1.5 percent in July from June, while coking coal prices jumped 2 percent from a month earlier. ($1 = 6.390 yuan)

China to raise gasoline, diesel prices from Thursday

Wed April06, 2011 21:08:17 |English.news.cn

BEIJING, April 6 (Xinhua) -- China will raise the retail prices for gasoline by 500 yuan (76.34 U.S. dollars) per tonne and diesel by 400 yuan per tonne starting Thursday, the country's top economic planner said on Wednesday.

After the implementation of the increase, which is the second price rise this year, the benchmark retail price of gasoline will be raised by 0.37 yuan per liter and diesel by 0.34 yuan per liter, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said.

Due to rising international crude oil prices and mounting domestic inflation pressures, the NDRC has "properly postponed" the timing of the rise in prices and has limited the increase, the statement said.

The agency said the government would provide subsidies to farmers, fishermen and public transportation systems in cities and offer temporary subsidies to taxi drivers to offset higher prices.

The Chinese government adopted an oil pricing mechanism at the start of 2009 which allows the NDRC to adjust retail fuel prices when international crude oil prices change by more than 4 percent over 22 straight working days.

As of Tuesday, the moving average crude oil prices of Brent, Dubai and Cinta have climbed 14.31 percent since China's last fuel price rise on Feb20, according to data from www.oilgas.com.cn, an online oil and gas market monitoring service.Editor: Wang Guanqun, Xinhua

Nippon aims to up H-beam price even as stocks up

Thu Mar 10, 2011 6:01am GMT

TOKYO, March 10 (Reuters) - Nippon Steel Corp (5401.T: Quote), the world's No.4 steelmaker, said it aims to secure another price hike on its H-beam steel to pass on surging input costs, even though sluggish sales pushed inventories higher in February.

Domestic inventories of its H-beam steel used in construction rose 8.9 percent to 174,600 tonnes at the end of February from the month before, a company official said.

"Shipments were slow in February due in part to the market's seasonal weakness, but with demand from small office and other building projects increasing, we plan to implement another price hike as soon as possible," he said.

Nippon Steel boosted the price of H-beams in February to above 80,000 yen per tonne for a third consecutive price increase, sources told Reuters.

Rival Tokyo Steel Manufacturing Co (5423.T: Quote) said last month it would raise prices of all its products in March to cover rising input costs. (Reporting by Yuko Inoue, sourced :Thomson Reuters)

Nucor raises steel prices as demand gains and raw materials climb

Sunday, 13 Feb 2011

It is reported that Nucor Corporation has raised prices for some of its products amid demand gains and increasing raw material costs.

Charlotte North Carolina based Nucor boosted prices for plate steel for March delivery by a minimum of USD 80 a tonne.

Nucor said that plate steel sold by contract was increased by USD 65 a tonne. AK Steel Holding Corporation, the fourth biggest US based steelmaker by 2010 sales, said it is raising prices for new orders of flat rolled carbon steel products by USD 50 a tonne.

Mr Patrick McFadden a Nucor spokesman said that Nucor sees rising raw materials and incremental demand. He added that "Some level of demand occurred to allow for the increases to be implemented."

US steelmakers have raised prices and brought more production back on line as they recovered from the plunge in demand following the 2008-09 recession.

Qatar Steel raises steel prices - Report

Friday, 04 Feb 2011
The Peninsula reported that steel is the latest product to be costlier in Qatar, deepening fears of a general price rise.
Qatar Steel raised the prices of its steel in line with the global trend. This was the second time this year that the country's largest and reputable steel maker resorted to a price hike.
The silver lining, though, is that Qatar Steel was among the last steel makers in the region and the rest of the world to effect a price escalation, pressured by the rising rates of key raw materials worldwide.

Current steel prices range up to QAR 2,955 a tonne locally, while the rate was as recently as until the end of last year around QAR 2,600 a tonne, so the price rise works out to more than 10%.
The first time the steel maker raised the rates of its products was a little more than a month ago when the prices were jacked up to QAR 2,780 a tonne. But with the latest raise the rate has reached QAR 2,955 per tonne.
Al Sharq quoted a local authorized dealer of Qatar Steel as saying yesterday that local steel was still cheaper than in other Arab and even GCC states.

And the raise was attributed to rising prices of pellets and scrap. Pellets were available for as much as USD 730 a tonne in the international markets from an earlier USD 580 to USD 600. Similarly, scarp rates have increased up to USD 430 a tonne in the global markets. (sourced:thepeninsulaqatar.com)
