Baosteel raises some main steel product prices for Jan

Mon Dec 12, 2011

SHANGHAI Dec 12 (Reuters) - China's Baoshan Iron & Steel will raise prices for some main steel products for January bookings, the company said on Monday, signalling that steel demand may improve at the beginning of the new year.

The company plans to keep hot-rolled coil prices flat but will raise cold-rolled coil by 100 yuan per tonne ($16) and some electro galvanized steel prices by 100-200 yuan per tonne, after it cut main steel product prices by 200-300 yuan in December from November.

The firm, also known as Baosteel, is the country's biggest listed steelmaker and its pricing is often seen as a barometer of China's steel market. ($1 = 6.3647 Chinese yuan)

Baosteel cuts HR and CR prices by USD 32 and USD 48 per tonne

Friday, 11 Nov 2011

China's Baoshan Iron & Steel will cut its main product prices for December bookings, a move reflecting the weakness in steel demand in the final month of 2011.

The company plans to slash hot-rolled coil prices by CNY 200 per tonne (USD 32) and cold rolled coil prices by CNY 300 per tonne (USD 48), after it kept its main steel product prices unchanged in November from October.

Baosteel pricing is often seen as a barometer of China's steel industry.

Japan flat steel exports seen down 10-20 pct in July-Sept

Mon Aug 29, 2011

* Q2 flat steel exports down 11 pct q/q to 4.3 mln T
* Hot coil exports to S. Korea dived 50 pct in June yr/yr
* Asia's steel market seen hitting bottom - traders
By Yuko Inoue

TOKYO, Aug 29 Reuters) - Japanese steelmakers' exports of flat steel products are expected to fall 10-20 percent in July-September from the previous quarter due to a surge in the yen and sluggish sales to South Korean firms, their biggest customers, traders said.

But they also expect a recovery in the quarter after that as car production picks up.

Japanese steelmakers, the world's largest exporters in 2010, saw their exports of flat steel products --hot-and cold-rolled coils and galvanized sheets -- fall 11 percent to 4.3 million tonnes in April-June.

Low-priced exports from China dragged down the market and the yen's steep rise against the dollar and other major Asian currencies made their products less competitive. Exports were also hit by a fall in global car production after Japan's March earthquake disrupted the supply of parts.

"A 10-20 percent fall in exports of steel sheets is very likely this quarter. They've found it very hard to strike deals because of a wide price differential," said an official at a Japanese trading company, who declined to be identified.

Nippon Steel Corp and JFE Steel Corp , the world's No.4 and No.5 steelmakers respectively, and South Korean customers are still negotiating export prices of hot coils for July-September.

South Korean firms want prices below their April-June contract price of $800 per tonne on cost and freight (CF) basis, while Japanese firms are determined to raise prices, traders said.

Japan's exports of hot coils to South Korea plummeted 50 percent in June from a year earlier to 166,000 tonnes and in the three months to June, they fell 33 percent to 671,500 tonnes, according to the Japan Iron and Steel Federation.

The trading company official said they will sag further in July.

Analysts also estimate annual production capacity by South Korean mills has expanded by 5 million tonnes in the past two to three years.

"On top of the strong yen, Hyundai Steel's production boost and inventory adjustments at downstream producers has had an impact," an official at another trading company said.

But there are some bright signs, including recent announcements by Baosteel and several Chinese mills on price hikes for September bookings.

Chinese steel makers' offer price on hot-rolled coils have inched up to $730 per tonne on CF basis, traders said. China's crude steel output in July inched down 1.1 percent, or 632,000 tonnes, from June to 59.3 million tonnes, although it was still 15.5 percent more than a year earlier.

Many industry experts expect a jump in Japan's car output later this year will keep Japanese steelmakers busy and operating at full capacity in the October-March period as they need to boost supply to domestic manufacturers. Even so, trading companies expect there will be leeway for exports and the companies will step up exports if prices are attractive.

Japan's steel industry estimates Toyota Motor Corp and other Japanese carmakers will be producing a combined 5.3 million cars in October-March to make up for lost sales after the earthquake. That is 26 percent more than the same period a year ago or a 40 percent jump from April-September.

Japan steelmakers' price talks with Korea hit stalemate

Tokyo (Reuters) - Japanese steelmakers' talks with South Korean customers on August-October exports have reached stalemate as a slowdown in the global economy and low-priced exports from China weigh on the market and the yen's strength makes price cuts difficult for Japanese exporters.

Japanese steelmakers are aiming for a price of $750 a tonne for hot-rolled coil for shipments during the three months, but South Korean customers insist on a level closer to $600, citing recent Chinese prices sold to South Korea of $600, two industry sources familiar with the matter said.

That level is similar to a year ago when the region's export market collapsed after China boosted exports ahead of tax changes aimed at curbing exports.

Asia's steel market shows no signs of a turnaround, the sources said, with makers in Japan, China and South Korea boosting exports despite signs of a slowdown in demand growth.

Japanese steelmakers' exports in the first six months of this year totalled 21.54 million tonnes, down only 2.3 percent from the same period a year ago when exports hit a record.

Japanese steelmakers were the world's biggest exporters last year, with Nippon Steel Corp , JFE Steel deriving half their revenues from exports.

Taiwan's China Steel Corp said on Friday the company has started to consider whether to bring anti-dumping suits against Chinese, South Korean and Japanese products, saying low-priced imports are disrupting the market.

Imports of Chinese thick-plate that contain boron particularly show steep import gains, the company told Reuters.

Spanish stainless steelmaker Acerinox posts €122.7 million net profit in 2010

Friday, 25 February 2011

The Spanish stainless steel producer Acerinox, S.A. has announced that in 2010 its profit after tax amounted to €122.7 million, compared to a loss of €229.2 million in 2009, while its sales came to €4.5 billion, increasing by 50.3 percent year on year.

"In the whole year, Acerinox worked with a melting capacity lower than 80 percent, which makes the achieved results very worthy, proving the success of the ‘Excellent Plan 2009-2010', which has allowed us to improve the competitiveness in the three factories, reads the company's statement.

In the given period, sales in Europe accounted for 40.3 percent of Acerinox' total sales, while 44.4 percent of total sales were made to the Americas. Acerinox supplied 9.1 percent of its total sales to Asia, 5.9 percent to Africa and 0.3 percent to Oceania.

In 2010, melting output amounted to 2.06 million metric tons, 14 percent higher than in 2009.

Regarding the outlook, Acerinox said that the demand recovery, sustained from the year end, and the increase of the alloy surcharges are favoring the orders entry and allowing the company to increase capacity utilization during the first quarter of 2011, which makes the company feel optimistic for the first quarter results. In addition, Acerinox said that the inventory level in the market will allow the consolidation of better price levels.

With the startup of the cold rolling mill in Bahru Stainless in the summer, the outputs of the other factories will increase to supply the new Asian factory of Acerinox with hot rolled coils.
