Reuters Recorder reported that thermal coal output in the world's top exporter Indonesia is seen rising 8.3% in 2012 as miners increase production to take advantage of strong prices.
Mr Bob Kamandanu chairman of the Indonesian Coal Mining Association said that Indonesia's thermal coal production will be 390 million tonnes in 2012 versus 360 million tonnes in 2011.
Mr Kamandanu had previously estimated 2011 coal output at 354 million tonnes, up from 320 million tonnes in 2010.
Australian thermal coal on the globalCOAL Newcastle index, the benchmark for Asian coal, closed at AUD 116.55 a tonne on March 2nd 2012.
Weaker demand has kept a lid on thermal coal prices in recent months, after prices plummeted from a high of over USD 125 tonne seen in the first quarter of 2011. Most Indonesian coal is mined in East Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, South Kalimantan and South Sumatra.
The archipelago of 17,000 Islands produces mainly low grade coal, used predominantly in emerging markets, with top importers being China, India and South Korea.
Both India and China have launched aggressive and ambitious plans to ramp up power supplies in the coming years.

Whitehaven Coal hit by explosives shortage
Friday, 27 Jan 2012
A shortage of explosives have affected mining at Whitehaven Coal sites Source:
The Courier Mail reported that Whitehaven Coal sales fell in the December quarter after a shortage of explosives hampered mining.
The miner reported total coal sales of almost 1.43 million tonnes for the three months to December 31st down 22% compared with the same period in 2010.
According to Whitehaven, a shortage of explosives due to the shutdown of Orica's Newcastle plant prevented it from mining ore bodies in the preferred sequence.
The company sad that a shipment scheduled to load late last month did not load until this month and there was a minor impact from wet weather on its open cut mines.
Morningstar senior resources analyst Mr Gareth James said that "This doesn't change the outlook for Whitehaven. Short term issues like this don't really have much meaning."
According to the company, Whitehaven's underground mine under development at Narrabri, in northwest NSW, continued to be hampered by a lack of skilled underground miners. But the capital cost estimate for the project of about USD 300 million remained unchanged.
The company had to buy 381,000 tonnes of coal from other suppliers during the December quarter to meet fixed price legacy contracts entered into in 2005-06, but these obligations would be fully met by the end of the current financial year.

Vietnam 2015 coal output to rise to 58 million tonnes
Thursday, 12 Jan 2012
Reuters quoted the government said Vietnam aims to raise its coal output to 55 million tonnes to 58 million tonnes in 2015 from an estimated 48.9 million tonnes this year in an effort to meet demand for fast growing electricity production.
The government said late on Tuesday in a plan for coal development that output is projected to rise to more than 75 million tonnes by 2030 thanks to the exploitation of new sites.
Electricity demand is growing at 7% to 10% a year and Vietnam is having trouble ensuring supply.
State utility Vietnam Electricity has said coal will be a major fuel for electricity over the next five years and will account for 47% of power generation by 2020.
The country has a dozen thermal power plants under construction which are expected to start operation by 2015.
Vinacomin the state run coal and mineral group plans to import at least 5 million tonnes of the fossil fuel in 2015 and officially starting imports in large volumes.
A government coal development plan said Vietnam has estimated total coal reserves at 48.7 billion tonnes by 2011.

Coal miner Bumi on track for 2011 target, output up
Thu Nov 17, 2011
* Says Q3 group production up 35 pct to 23 mln tonnes
* Berau Coal sales up 20 pct to 5.5 mln tonnes
* Realised prices for Q3 of $94 per tonne, up 32 percent
LONDON, Nov 17 (Reuters) - Coal miner Bumi Plc , a joint venture between Nat Rothschild and Indonesia's influential Bakrie family, said it was on track to hit its output target of 86 million tonnes in 2011 after a 35 percent rise in production in the third quarter.
Over the first nine months of the year, the group's production has totalled 62 million tonnes.
Realised prices for the group over the quarter were $94 per tonne, up by almost a third on the same period a year ago.
Subsidiary Berau Coal saw sales rise 20 percent compared with the same period last year while coal output increased 23 percent. Berau's 2011 output target is on track and its longer term expansion plan is on schedule, the group said.
Bumi Plc also owns a 29 percent stake in Jakarta-listed PT Bumi, which controls the KPC and Arutmin coal mines.
Relations between Rothschild and his Indonesian partners have deteriorated in recent weeks, with a leaked letter for Rothschild last week calling for a "radical cleaning up" of corporate governance at PT Bumi in a show of frustration.
The Bakries have since gone public themselves with their own criticism of Rothschild's broadside.
Bumi Plc, which began life as Rothschild vehicle Vallar, gained a premium London listing earlier this year.
Its shares have since dropped more than 20 percent, slipping below 850 pence in September in a dip that triggered the mandatory repayment of a loan and almost forced the Bakries into default, before they signed a deal earlier this month to sell half their stake.

Shanxi monthly coal output breaks new high in June
Friday, 12 Aug 2011
According to Shanxi Bureau of Statistics that, in June the leading coal producing province in China churned out an all time high 78.15 million tonnes of raw coal, increasing by 26.2%YoY and 4.82 million tonnes over May. The cumulative output in January to June totals 411 million tonnes rising by 21.5%.
The volume of Shanxi coal exiting the province has also set a new record by 53.56 million tonnes up by 1.82 million tonnes MoM and 15.4%YoY. The total amount in January to June touches 284.75 million tonnes up by 9.3%YoY.
Analysts say coal industry dominates Shanxi industrial economic development while PPI fluctuation greatly affects industrial economic benefits. Global oil price especially imported coal price volatility largely determines domestic coal rates. Macro-control policies and market demand shifts remain major influences in Shanxi’s economic quality. Based on those, analysts estimate a steady and fast growth for Shanxi’s industrial economy in the second half of 2011.

Yankuang Group, the parent of Yanzhou Coal Mining Co., is targeting 80 million tonnes coal output in 2011, growing 30 percent from 2010, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing the company’s chairman.
The increase would mainly come from its Australian mines. In Dec 2009, Yankuang purchased Australia’s Felix Resource Ltd at the cost of A$3.54 billion.
The group expects its coal output to reach 150 million tonnes in 2015, increasing 1.5 times from 60 million tonnes in 2010, chairman Wang Xin was cited as said.
Coal produced by Yankuang had stood at 40 million tonnes in last years, and surged to 60 million tonnes in 2010, thanks to increased imports from Australia, said the chairman.

Macarthur Coal cuts output guidance

Saturday, 19 Feb 2011
Macarthur Coal Limited announced a reduction in its 2011 financial year sales production target as a result of extended unseasonal rainfall impacting on production.
The Company’s saleable production target for the 2011 financial year was 5.0 million tonne. Macarthur Coal is decreasing its full year sales forecast to be in the range of 4.1 million tonne to 4.3 million tonne.
On December 3rd 2010, Macarthur Coal declared force majeure to customers as a result of unseasonal heavy rain in the Bowen Basin. Macarthur Coal advises that the declaration of force majeure with customers remains in place. Recovery continues however a return to full production levels has been hampered by additional rainfall received from cyclones Anthony and Yasi.
Ms Nicole Hollows CEO of Macarthur Coal said that “Our operations at both Coppabella and Moorvale have been disrupted by unseasonal heavy rains over the past three months; continuation of excessive wet weather has caused further delays to production through to February. Although we are anticipating more rainfall, should it remain at historical averages we are confident of progressively returning to normal production over the next few weeks. Water diversion structures, pit protection measures, dam levy work and onsite water management initiatives completed prior to the wet season have helped each site manage the impact of unseasonal rainfall on the operations and the environment.”

Colombia coal output up to 74.35 mln T in '2010
Sunday, 13 February 2011
Colombia coal production and exports rose 2 percent in 2010 from the previous year but missed government targets, the mining regulator said.Heavy rains and floods hit the world's No. 5 coal exporter last year that hurt production at high-quality thermal coal mines in the northeast at a time when global supplies were tight due to problems in many major exporters.
The Ingeominas regulator said output was 74.35 million tonnes, nearly 6 million tonnes below the government's target last year, but up from 72.8 million tonnes in 2009.Exports rose to 68.14 million tonnes from 66.75 million tonnes in 2009, it said in projections based on royalty payments.Coal exporters in Colombia are still trying to catch up on delayed shipments after rains last year, caused by the La Nina weather phenomenon, which has also done billions of dollars in damages in the country.Colombia's coal industry is dominated by big thermal producers with their own port and rail facilities such as Glencore, Drummond and Cerrejon, which is owned equally by BHP Billiton, Anglo American and Xstrata.Supply disruptions in key exporting countries such as Australia have boosted coal prices. Sharp spikes and falls in the past two months are expected to continue this year although the general trend is for a strengthening market overall. The forecasts for average 2011 coal prices given by 22 analysts and industry players polled by Reuters were $30-37 a tonne higher than predictions given in January last year but only slightly higher than current values.
