Floods derail freight train in Australia

Wed, 28 Dec 2011

AFP reported that heavy flooding following a tropical cyclone in northern Australia swept a 20 carriage freight train off a bridge on Tuesday, injuring the driver, as the storm system threatened to intensify.

The iron ore train derailed following torrential rain in the Northern Territory caused by Grant, a tropical cyclone that triggered heavy flooding in some areas, swamping roads and stranding scores of people.

Its two crew members both managed to escape and were assessed by medical staff who were sent by helicopter to the scene, with the driver later airlifted to hospital with spinal injuries, according to local media reports.

Northern Territory police said in a statement that "The ATSB (Australian Transport Safety Bureau) has been notified of the crash and will take carriage of the investigation.”

The Northern Territory's environment department, NRETAS, said it was examining whether any material from the train had leaked into the floodwaters. It said “It's still unclear exactly what the components were on that train. We will definitely be sending down investigators who will do an environmental impact and check it all out, but it's inaccessible at the moment because of the floodwaters. All I can say is we are investigating. It is of concern.”

The railway's operator, US-based Genesee and Wyoming, said a number of containers carrying "domestic consumables and copper concentrate" had derailed and 50 metres of track had been washed away.

Copper concentrate is considered a class nine environmentally hazardous substance.

Supply disruptions in Colombia and Australia may boost coal prices - Barclays Capital

Sunday, 13 Nov 2011

Barclays Capital said that potential disruptions to Colombian and Australian supply could offer some support to coal prices in the final quarter of the year.

Analyst Miswin Mahesh in a note said that “Colombian supplies could be at risk, given that seasonally it is going through the wettest months of the year and there are expectations of a stronger-than-normal rainy season affecting both mining throughput and transportation infrastructure.”

He said that “Australian supplies are also at risk from the La Nina weather phenomenon repeating itself noting, A combination of these two supply-side risks, combined with a healthier than expected winter appetite for coal in both of the basins, could provide a surprise boost to prices in this final quarter of the year. But this will only come if stocks at both the consumer as well as producer end reach critical levels.”

Rio Tinto lifts force majeure at Australian coal mine

Friday, 27 May 2011

Rio Tinto PLC has now lifted force majeure on sales of coal from the last of its Australian coal mines after recovering from flooding early in the year.

A spokesman for the company said that the clause, which releases a company from supply obligations due to circumstances beyond its control, was lifted at the London based company's Hail Creek mine in central Queensland state on May 12.

The spokesman said that force majeure was declared at Rio Tinto's four Queensland coking coal mines in late December following monsoon rains and lifted at three mines in February and March.

Hail Creek mine, located 90 kilometers southwest of Mackay, supplies steel mills in Asia and Europe. Rio Tinto has previously said hard coking coal production fell to 1.63 million metric tonnes in the first three months of the year, down 29% on the previous quarter and 12% on the same period a year earlier. Alcoa expects to win renewal of Australian coal mine license

Monday, 07 Mar 2011

Alcoa Inc expects to win approval to renew 50 year license to mine brown coal in Australia’s Victoria state to power its Point Henry aluminum smelter.

Mr Brendan Foran Alcoa Australia Community Relations Officer said that “We’re very confident that we can come to an agreement with the state government. Alcoa’s stated intent has been for many, many years that we would exercise that option and the discussions with the government have been around renewing the second 50 year term.”

Mr Foran said that the Point Henry smelter near Geelong in Victoria produces 185,000 metric tonnes of aluminum a year more than 10% of Australia’s aluminum output. The smelter gets about 40% of power needs from the brown coal fired plant.

The Australian Financial Review reported that Alcoa would close the facility if the government doesn’t renew the mine license that expires at the end of the year. Australia’s government wants to set a carbon price from next July ahead of a trading program that may begin as early as 2015.

Colombia coal output up to 74.35 mln T in '2010

Sunday, 13 February 2011
Colombia coal production and exports rose 2 percent in 2010 from the previous year but missed government targets, the mining regulator said.Heavy rains and floods hit the world's No. 5 coal exporter last year that hurt production at high-quality thermal coal mines in the northeast at a time when global supplies were tight due to problems in many major exporters.

The Ingeominas regulator said output was 74.35 million tonnes, nearly 6 million tonnes below the government's target last year, but up from 72.8 million tonnes in 2009.Exports rose to 68.14 million tonnes from 66.75 million tonnes in 2009, it said in projections based on royalty payments.Coal exporters in Colombia are still trying to catch up on delayed shipments after rains last year, caused by the La Nina weather phenomenon, which has also done billions of dollars in damages in the country.Colombia's coal industry is dominated by big thermal producers with their own port and rail facilities such as Glencore, Drummond and Cerrejon, which is owned equally by BHP Billiton, Anglo American and Xstrata.Supply disruptions in key exporting countries such as Australia have boosted coal prices. Sharp spikes and falls in the past two months are expected to continue this year although the general trend is for a strengthening market overall. The forecasts for average 2011 coal prices given by 22 analysts and industry players polled by Reuters were $30-37 a tonne higher than predictions given in January last year but only slightly higher than current values.

Bayan Resources, Kangaroo Resources Ltd. extend due diligence

Tue,Feb08, 2011
Coal miner controlled by businessman Dato' Low Tuck Kwong PT Bayan Resources Tbk (BYAN) and Australia-listed coal company Kangaroo Resources Limited have agreed to extend a due diligence period to enable the accomplishment of small number of outstanding items, quoted by Insider Stories.

Insider Stories further reported, in an official statement obtained today, both companies initially set a 30 days of the due diligence on January 28 2011.
The extension won't delay the transaction's accomplishment. Both Bayan and Kangaroo are continuing to finalize independent experts' reviews on the assets, ahead of shareholder meetings to approve the transaction.
On December 28 2010, Bayan and Kangaroo Resources entered into a share purchase agreement.

Bayan will inject Kangaroo Resources with 9 coal concession assets in East Kalimantan with coal resources of 3.8 billion metric tons.
In return, Kangaroo Resources will issue new shares, enabling Bayan Resources to control Kangaroo Resources.

Bayan also entered into share sale and purchase agreements with three buyers PT Ilthabi Bara Utama, Prime Mine Resources Limited, Romo Nitiyudi Wachjo, on December 28 2010 to acquire 9 coal concession assets in East Kalimantan.

Xstrata's thermal coal down, but coking up

Reported by AAP
Wednesday, February 2, 2011

Anglo-Swiss mining giant Xstrata has attributed a dip in Australian thermal coal production in 2010 to the Queensland floods and the planned closure of a mine in NSW.
Xstrata, the world's largest exporter of thermal coal, which is used to generate steam for electricity, produced 37.8 million tonnes (Mt) of the commodity in Australia in calendar 2010, down from 41.1 Mt in 2009.

"Australian thermal coal production for 2010, including semi-soft, was 2.9 million tonnes, or six per cent, below 2009 production," Xstrata said late on Tuesday.
The output fall was primarily due to the planned closure of the United underground colliery in NSW and the impact of severe weather during the first quarter and in December on the Queensland open-cut operations.
However, volumes of coking coal - used in blast furnaces in the production of iron - from Xstrata's Australian mines rose substantially to 7.7 Mt, from 6.4 Mt previously.
"Australian coking coal volumes increased by 20 per cent, or 1.3 million tonnes, as a result of a full year of production from Oaky number one (in Queensland) and high productivity from Oaky North," Xstrata said.
That increase would have been greater if not for industrial action at the Tahmoor mine in NSW in the second half of the year, when workers led by the Construction Forestry, Mining and Energy Union went on strike, calling for wage increases.
The company also announced it had completed construction of a magnetite base plant at Ernest Henry mine, in central Queensland, as part of a $589 million undertaking to transform the project into a major underground copper-gold operation.
The plant had produced its first magnetite iron ore concentrate, an important by-product of the copper-gold concentrating process, Xstrata said.

Magnetite output is expected to be at a rate of about 1.2 Mt per annum, with exports expected to start from Townsville port in the first half of this year.
Ernest HenryMining general manager Myles Johnston said the plant would play a major role in extending the life of the project to at least 2024.
"The transformation of open pit mining operations to a major shaft underground mine is on budget with the shaft scheduled to be commissioned in the first quarter of 2013," Mr Johnston said.
Xstrata mined 74,595 tonnes of copper at Ernest Henry in 2010, up from 35,562 tonnes previously.
The mine also yielded 91,259 tonnes of gold, up from 45,227 in 2009.
Xstrata said a four per cent lift in its total global gold production in 2010 was due to a strong recovery in gold production at Ernest Henry.
Xstrata has activated preliminary emergency procedures as powerful Cyclone Yasi hits Queensland, with nickel production suspended from the 30,000 tonnes per year Yabulu nickel refinery.

Gladstone Port: coal stocks over 50% normal volume

Wed, 1 Feb 2011,
PERTH Feb2 (Reuters) - Australia's Gladstone Port Corp said on Wednesday that its stockpiles have increased to just over 1 million tonnes of coal as it recovers from the flooding that disrupted coal supplies, little more than half the 2 million tonnes it normally holds.
The port, which is outside the warning area for Cyclone Yasi and does not expect to be affected by the storm, expects to ship about 500,000 tonnes of coal this week, the company said in a statement.
