Mon,Mar07, 2011
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly) – Sir John Bond has been named the new chairperson of diversified mining giant Xstrata to succeed Willy Strothotte, who will retire on May 4.
Bond is the outgoing chairperson of UK mobile group Vodafone and joined the Xstrata group as a consultant with immediate effect.
Xstrata deputy chairperson David Rough said that Bond, who had also chaired HSBC in the past, had a record of shareholder value-creation and that he had gained “unrivalled” experience in the emerging Asian economies.
“I have every confidence that Sir John will make a significant contribution to the Xstrata board and the ongoing success of the group.”
Strothotte served as chairperson of Xstrata since its inception in 2002.
“Willy Strothotte has overseen an extraordinary transformation of Xstrata into one of the world’s premier mining and metals companies in less than ten years,” commented CEO Mick Davis. Edited by: Creamer Media Reporter, Mariaan Webb
