NMDC May Pay $300 Million for Mozambique, Russian Coal Mines

Thu, January 05, 2012

NMDC Ltd., India’s largest iron ore producer, plans to acquire two coking coal mines in Mozambique and Russia for about $300 million to feed its planned steel plants in India.

Talks are on to acquire a mine with 360 million metric tons of deposits in Mozambique’s Tete province and an 80 million-ton mine in Russia’s Kemorovo region, Chairman Narendra Kumar Nanda said today in a phone interview. The company is also considering buying an iron ore and manganese mine in Brazil’s Amapa province, he said, without elaborating.

Lack of access to local mines and rising global prices of coking coal are eroding profits at Indian steelmakers, spurring them to look for acquisitions overseas. NMDC, which has 210 billion rupees ($4 billion) of cash in hand, is building a 3 million ton steel plant in central India and a similar-sized plant jointly with Russia’s OAO Severstal in southern India.

“Considering its cash reserves, such acquisitions are like baby steps for NMDC,” said Rahul Jain, a Mumbai-based analyst with RBS Equities India Ltd. “The global slowdown has lowered asset prices and this is a time when the company should approach bigger targets.”

The shares fell as much as 1.5 percent to 169 rupees and traded at 170.05 rupees as of 12:34 p.m. in Mumbai. The stock has declined 39 percent in the past year, compared with a 21 percent drop in the benchmark Sensitive Index.

“We want to be prepared when our steel mills start operating,” said Nanda, who took charge on Jan. 1. “We can bring some coal from these mines to our plants and sell the rest for hedging purposes.”

NMDC expects to appoint advisers by the end of this month to carry out the due diligence for the assets, he said. The company recently ended acquisition talks for Greystone Mineracao do Brasil’s iron ore mine in Brazil and a coal mine in Russia, Nanda said.

NMDC said in October it signed an accord to acquire a 50 percent stake in Australia’s Legacy Iron Ore Ltd. for A$18.9 million ($19.5 million), its first acquisition overseas.

Windfall coming for CIL from new pricing method

Tuesday, 03 Jan 2012

Having an unenviable record of zero production growth in 2010-11 and now facing an uphill task in posting production growth this fiscal, the price rationalization move seems to have offered Coal India Ltd a clear opportunity to post a substantial profit growth in the January-March quarter.

Company officials, however maintain that the new system should keep pressure on the respective mining subsidiaries to maintain quality or risk witnessing a revenue slippage. However, considering that the company has yet to have adequate calorie metres and coal would be sold in the next three months merely by converting existing products from UHV to GCV by using available calculators, there is little doubt that CIL would witness an approximately INR 1,500 crore positive impact on the bottomline in the next quarter on account of the new mechanism

Since the company had last enhanced prices with effect from March 2011 the price benefit will be even higher for January to February.

1. End result

Even though CIL is facing an uphill task posting production growth this fiscal compared to 2010-11 and profits for the fourth quarter of this fiscal may spiral. What is more interesting worker unions are demanding a minimum wage hike of 30% under the ongoing negotiation for a five year wage pact with effect from July 1.

Rough estimates suggest that such a payout should cost CIL INR 6,000 to INR 6,500 crore annually over and above the existing employee cost. This is nearly double the company current provisioning of an estimated INR 3,000 crore annually.

Assuming that Coal India will yield to pressure from the trade unions, the new pricing exercise therefore will offer the company sufficient room to strike the wage deal without negatively impacting the bottom line.

2. Price hike?

However, if the entire price benefit is passed on to employees and it will be mandatory for the company to either enhance the production and productivity or escalate prices further to ensure profit growth in 2012-13.

Needless to mention, the company official sources are tight lipped about the emerging possibilities.

JSW Steel Vijaynagar plant operating at 60pct to 65pct

Tuesday, 15 Nov 2011

Mr Seshagiri Rao CFO of JSW Steel said that JSW Steel Ltd is operating its main plant in southern India at 60% to 65% capacity as the shortage of iron ore persists.

Mr Rao told reporters that "We have iron ore stocks but we need to increase [them] adding that the company plans to increase the amount of ore it has been getting through court mandated auctions.”

JSW Steel has been hit by a ban on mining in three districts of Karnataka state which supplied most of the iron ore for its 10 million metric tonne factory in the town of Vijaynagar.

Since the ban came into effect a few months ago the company has depended on court-mandated auctions to buy iron ore, which it said isn't currently enough to run the plant at full capacity.

APAC Resources see iron ore buyers in Asia

Tuesday, 25 Oct 2011

APAC Resources is looking for iron ore buyers in Asia to counter the effects of an economic slowdown in the mainland.

The SAR based firm is mainly involved in natural resources investment and iron ore exports to China, where its customers are steel plants in Shanxi, Shandong, Jiangxi and Jiangsu provinces.

Chief executive officer Mr Andrew Ferguson said prices of commodities are not immune from the financial crisis. But Mr Ferguson said such prices are high compared with a falling equity market.

Mr Ferguson said "We would not cut the price like other iron ore giants last week, adding buyers which are second-tier steel factories, rely on our high quality products. He expects iron ore prices to hover around USD 150 per tonne to USD 160 per tonne for the remainder of the year. The spot price of iron ore slumped to a 12-month low of USD 153.40 per tonne on October 17.”

APAC Resources also said annual production capacity at Mount Gibson, one of the largest listed iron ore producers in Australia will rise to 10 million tonnes from the present seven million tonnes as a new mine, Extension Hill and starts production in the fourth quarter.

SAfrican miner ARM's profit surges, outlook upbeat

Feb28, 2011 1:27pm GMT

By Agnieszka Flak

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - South African diversified miner African Rainbow Minerals (ARM) said on Monday first-half profit more than trebled, boosted by a rise in commodity prices and higher output from its projects.

ARM, which has interests in nickel, coal, iron ore, platinum, chrome and manganese, said the outlook for its commodities was positive due to demand from China and global supply constraints, although the strong rand was a concern.

Shares in the company were down 0.67 percent at 209.58 rand by 1240 GMT, compared with a 0.27 rise in Johannesburg's Top-40 index of blue chips.

Analysts said the market had largely factored in the spike in earnings after guidance given earlier this month and saw the share drop as part of a larger sell-off of South African stocks.

"On balance, the results are acceptable, good ... they are embarking on some very ambitious projects," said Sasha Naryshkine, an analyst at Vestact.

The company is pursuing an aggressive growth strategy to benefit from higher prices and rising demand.

It is expanding its Khumani iron ore mine to produce an annual 16 million tonnes by the 2013 financial year, out of which 14 million would be destined for exports.

The company said its Konkola North copper project in Zambia, which the company is developing together with Brazil's Vale, was also on track, with estimated production of 45,000 tonnes of copper per year.

The copper concentrator will be commissioned in December 2012, with full production targeted for the 2015 financial year.

ARM said there was potential to increase output at the mine to an annual 100,000 tonnes.

"We plan to spend about a billion dollars with our partner Vale in Zambia over the next six or seven years," said Chairman Patrice Motsepe.

The expansion of its Nkomati nickel project was on track, with full production envisaged in the 2013 financial year.

PROFIT SURGE

ARM said first-half headline earnings per share, the main profit gauge in South Africa which excludes certain one-time items, rose to 734 cents compared with 214 cents.

The company said it had managed to reduce costs at some of its operations. Its ferrous unit, which includes iron ore, chrome and manganese, contributed most to the rise in earnings.

Chrome ore sales volumes from Assmang, in which ARM has a 50 percent stake, more than doubled, while production of copper and manganese rose 10 percent and 43 percent, respectively.

Sales for the six months rose to 6.7 billion rand from 4.2 billion in the comparable period. The positive impact from a rise in commodity prices was partially offset by the stronger rand.

Motsepe said Chief Executive Andre Wilkens would step down, but will continue within the company as an executive director. he did not say who would replace Wilkens.

Shares in the company are up 0.43 percent so far this year, in line with a 0.57 percent rise in Johannesburg's Top-40 index of blue-chips.

Coal shortage: Power, cement companies to be affected

February 26, 2011, 0:46 IST
By Malini Bhupta

Mumbai: If power producers continue to run plants below 50% PLF, further capacity additions may get impacted.

By now, it’s a well-known secret that power producers are in for tough times this year, with plant load factors (PLF) of several producers falling by as much as 20 per cent due to acute coal shortage. This pattern is likely to spill over into the new financial year too, since there just isn’t enough coal available to feed India’s steel and power production facilities.

Even as India’s new power producers were coming to terms with coal shortages in India, the floods and subsequent cyclone in Australia have come has a body-blow to cement, power and steel producers. Imported coal prices are up 44 per cent year-on-year, impacting profitability even further. A foreign brokerage house in its report has downgraded cement and power utilities, saying: “Following the emergence of worries over domestic coal availability coupled with recent tightening of global coal markets, we are beginning to get concerned about the resultant impact on Indian utilities and cement producers. For Indian power utilities, peak utilisation levels could drop 2,000 bps by FY14E supporting a demand growth of 6 per cent. For cement players already grappling with excess supply, the tightness in coal markets will likely exacerbate margin pressure.”

According to analyst estimates, Indian coal availability is expected to rise at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of only 4.2 per cent over the financial year 2010-14, which is insufficient to meet the power capacity growth of 10.4 per cent.

To make matters worse, merchant tariffs remained subdued during the third quarter due to good monsoons leading to muted demand growth (+5 per cent year-on-year) and higher hydro generation (+7 per cent y-o-y). Operating rates (PLF) would hence compress by 2000 basis points over FY11-14E, assuming other sources of capacity do not suffer from lack of fuel.

Availability of coal will not only affect plant load factors over the next few quarters, but this will also hit future capacities. However, running plants at a PLF of less than 55 per cent may result in the deferral of capacity-addition in early stages of development. Consequently, the brokerage firm estimates that medium-term spot rates will stay at Rs 4/unit versus the street’s expectation of a sharp decline.

However, the issues are slightly different for cement companies. Given that utilisation levels are already low, rising raw material costs will put further pressure on their margins and consequently, bottomlines. Production discipline may be one of few options for cement players, says the report.(sourced:Business-standard)
