Reuters reported that a surge of offers of almost every variety of coal in every cargo size for delivery into Europe pushed physical prices down by around USD 1.00 on Monday to USD 97.00.
TRADES
A March loading South African cargo traded at USD 105.00 a tonne on Friday but a 50,000 tonne March cargo also traded at USD 103.50, down around USD 1.00.
An April loading South African cargo traded at USD 103.10.
PRICES
A March DES ARA multi-origin including US coal cargo and a US cargo were offered at USD 96.90 and USD 96.96 with no bid.
A Russian March DES ARA cargo was offered at USD 98.60.
An April multi origin cargo was bid at USD 96.50 while a multi origin plus US cargo was offered at USD 97.95.

Steam coal prices mixed despite gas and oil rise
Tuesday, 07 Feb 2012
Reuters reported that steam coal prices made modest gains of around 75 cents per tonne on Monday as the arrival of more cargoes balanced against a freeze across much of Europe, which drove up gas and oil prices.
A February delivery DES ARA parcel of multi origin, including American coal, was bid at USD 96.75 and offered at USD 98.00, up 75 cents.
A March DES ARA for coal was bid at USD 96.50 and offered at USD 100.50, down 50 cents.
A March South African cargo was bid at USD 105.00, down 50 cents.
Several European utilities and utility/traders signed term contracts two years ago to import American coal, which have kept stockpiles swollen through a winter that has been unusually mild until the latest cold snap.
As more US and Colombian cargoes arrive in Europe while spot buying remains weak, some downward pressure is expected on prices. How far this will be offset by a resumption of large scale Chinese imports, remains to be seen.
Floods in Australia and heavy rains during the past month in Indonesia are already delaying shipments, but so far end users have not been compelled to seek replacement tonnes.

IMX Resources to sell iron ore shipment on spot market
Tuesday, 03 Jan 2012
IMX Resources has taken steps to sell its 19th shipment of magnetite ore from the Cairn Hill Phase 1 project in South Australia to an existing spot shipment customer.
The company had anticipated the resumption of magnetite ore deliveries to joint venture partner Taifeng Yuanchuang International Development Company, starting with the 19th shipment, following the modification of its processing plant at Bayuquan in China and reduction of its inventory of stockpiled ore.
However, Taifeng advised the joint venture operating entity, Termite Resources NL, that it is unwilling to pay the Phase 1 Life of Mine sales contract pricing for the shipment and has requested renegotiation of the terms of the contract.
Taifeng has also advised the joint venture that as a result of continuing bottlenecks at its processing plant it cannot take all of the ore it has contracted to purchase under the contract.
Mr Neil Meadows MD of IMX Resources said that the company is working with Taifeng to resolve the issues in an equitable and timely manner.
He said “We have had strong interest from other parties in our product and we are confident that we will have long term offtake agreements to support the operation in place by the end of the third quarter of the 2012 financial year.”
The joint venture has begun negotiations of long term contracts with alternative parties for the part of the ore production from Cairn Hill that Taifeng has indicated it will not take.
IMX’s interest in the Cairn Hill JV is held through a direct 51% interest in the joint venture company Outback Iron, which holds the Cairn Hill mining lease through subsidiary Termite. Taifeng has the remaining 49% interest in Outback.

Coal ship queue hits 60 at Newcastle Port in Australia
Thursday, 29 Dec 2011
ABC reported that Newcastle's ship queue has hit 60 for the first time in several years, as global demand for coal continues to rise.
In October the Hunter Valley Coal Chain Coordinator warned of increased ship queues, due to planned coal chain maintenance outages, combined with strong demand.
More than 50 vessels were waiting to be loaded at Port Waratah Coal Services Newcastle coal loaders at the end of last month.
Now there are 60 vessels, a number not seen for several years.
But a vessel arrival system means only 20 ships can stay in the Newcastle anchorage, with others anchored elsewhere or in transit.
But the ship queue spike is not expected to affect export targets through the Port of Newcastle.
The ship queue should drop soon with the number of vessels waiting expected to be below 40 at the end of January.

Mongolia Energy Corp to commence China coal shipment
Monday, 05 Dec 2011
Mongolia Energy Corporation Limited announced that it has completed construction of the 311 kilometers Khushuut Road at the beginning of November 2011. It was successfully accepted by the State Commission Inspection Committee made up of 25 members on November 6th 2011.
MEC is expected to receive the final conclusion permission in writing on 28 November 2011. Once it has been received, MEC will commence coal shipment exporting to China. MEC is the first mining company to successfully construct the longest hard-surface paved road for coal transport in Mongolia.
The Kliushuut Road has a distance of 311 kilometers in length, stretching from Khushuut mine site to Yarant (Mongolia) and Takeshensken border (Xinjiang). The road crosses five sub provinces of Kliovd (Darvi, Tsetseg, Altai, Uyench, Bulgan). There are 17 bridges and more than 200 waste water pipes built along the Road.
The Kliushuut Road was built and commissioned for a payload of up to 110 tones. A completion of a paved road has a direct positive impact to reduce the operating costs to the mining business. What used to be a gravel travel road which takes over 8 hours to travel to the border will now only take 4 horns.
The road project being the biggest infrastructure development project for Khovd province, and one of the large scale road investment projects by privately owned mining enterprise in the Mongolia history. It provides many social benefits to the local community. Not only does it provide an efficient mode of transportation for all the local residence, the road project itself also created hundreds of jobs for local provinces and a considerable income for provinces and state.
Coal trucks traveling on paved road will minimize a negative environment impact to the area by minimizing the potential dust which normally caused by coal transport on gravel roads. In addition, a paved road provides a safer road environment for coal shipments.
MEC being the first is now a role model for all mining projects in Mongolia to build the infrastructure (road) prior to shipping minerals for export. It's such an environmentally friendly decision which is praised by many Mongolians and government bodies.
Mr James Schaeffer Jr CEO of MEC said that "The commission of the Khushuut Road indicates a milestone in our coking coal exporting and our team will continue our efforts in all aspects to expand our Khushuut operations."

China looking to resell Indonesian coal cargoes - Barclays
Tue,25 Oct 2011
Commodity Online reported that anecdotal evidence has suggested that China is even looking to resell Indonesian cargoes back into the seaborne coal market, further heightening worries for softer import demand for the rest of Q4.
The international coal benchmarks tumbled amidst weak market fundamentals due to the current global supply glut. API2 and API4 shifted downward roughly USD 3 across the curve.
Stocks at European ports and Richards Bay remain quite high, with little buying interest from consumers because the spot market European utilities have not sourced coal aggressively despite improved river water levels and higher clean dark spreads as coal and carbon prices have fallen recently.
Chinese and Indian demand remains lacklustre, giving little support for Richards Bay prices.

Reuters reported that coal shipments from the Kuznetsk Basin were 4 million tonnes less than planned during May to July due to problems caused by a large number of freight firms.
Mr Aman Tuleyev governor of Kemerovo which includes the Kuzbass fields said that regional coal miners had built up stockpiles of 10.7 million tonnes of coal, double normal levels.
He said that the shortfall was caused by a lack of coordination among freight operators in Kemerovo, where more than 200 firms are active.
A statement on the Kemerovo region's website said that "The situation could worsen in winter, when shipments to thermal power stations begin.”
Shipping delays are frequent in the winter months, when difficulties such as those associated with unloading frozen coal delay unloading.
A large number of private freight operators have entered the market in recent years, and Tuleyev said the problem has been compounded by the ongoing privatisation of the RZhD Russian state rail company's freight operations.
The governor said that "In order to resolve the problem, it is necessary to improve the legal and regulatory framework.”
He asked Russian Prime Minister Mr Vladimir Putin to order the relevant ministries and government departments to take steps to ensure that coal can be shipped from the Kuzbass.
The statement further said that "A number of companies have cut coal output because it is not possible to ship production.”

Great Lakes coal shipment in July fell by 25pct YoY
Tuesday, 16 Aug 2011
Shipments of coal on the Great Lakes totaled 3.1 million tonnes in July 2011, up by 58,000 tonnes over June 2011, but a decrease of approximately 25% YoY as compared to a year ago and the month's 5 year average.
Loadings at Lake Superior ports fell almost 31% as compared to a year ago. Shipments from Lake Michigan terminals increased marginally. Loadings at Lake Erie docks slumped almost 20%.
YTD, the coal trade stands at 12.7 million tonnes, a decrease of 14% YoY. Shipments are nearly 29% off the 5 year average for the January to July 2011 timeframe.
Lake Carriers' Association represents 17 American companies that operate 55 US flag vessels on the Great Lakes and carry the raw materials that drive the nation's economy, iron ore and fluxstone for the steel industry, aggregate and cement for the construction industry, coal for power generation. Collectively, these vessels can transport more than 115 million tonnes of cargo per year when high water offsets lack of adequate dredging.

U.S. may increase coal exports to Europe - Macquarie
Sunday, 14 Aug 2011
Macquarie Group Limited said that the U.S. may increase coal exports, further boosting supply of the commodity in Europe.
Mr Hayden Atkins, an analyst in London at Macquarie's commodities unit, said that "A big push to encourage natural gas burning in the U.S. may drive up coal exports to Europe, China and India."
According to a report on the website of the U.S. Energy Information Administration, the closing of Germany’s nuclear plants will increase demand in that nation. U.S. steam coal exports to Europe in the first quarter more than tripled from a year earlier to 4.9 million tonnes from 1.5 million tonnes.
U.S. coal exports are at their highest level since 1992. Exports to the Netherlands jumped to 1.1 million tonnes from 334,628 tonnes. Shipments to Germany went to 899,009 tonnes from 166,314 tonnes. Trade to the UK rose to 852,159 tonnes from 159,280 tonnes.
Merrill analysts including Mr Sabine Schels in London said that switching to natural gas from coal in U.S. power generation will accelerate in 2012 because of new Environ mental Protection Agency rules to cut emissions of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides, Bank of America Merrill Lynch said July 19th 2011. The Cross State Air Pollution Rule requires 27 states in the eastern U.S. to cut sulfur dioxide emissions by 73% and nitrous oxides by 54% by 2014 compared with 2005 levels.
