ArcelorMittal Bremen orders twin-ladle furnace from Siemens VAI to boost the efficiency of the ladle treatment facility in its Bremen Steelworks

ByLinz, Austria,
Feb10,2011

ArcelorMittal Bremen orders twin-ladle furnace from Siemens VAI to boost the efficiency of the ladle treatment facility in its Bremen Steelworks Siemens VAI Metals Technologies has received an order from ArcelorMittal Bremen GmbH to supply a 300 ton twin-ladle furnace. The plant will be constructed in the works of ArcelorMittal Bremen GmbH to replace the two conditioning stands currently used for treating liquid steel. This will substantially reduce steel treatment costs. The project has a volume of several million euros. The new ladle furnace is scheduled to come into operation in February 2012.

The twin-ladle furnace will be installed directly downstream of the LD converter in the ArcelorMittal Bremen GmbH Steelworks and be designed to ensure the best possible logistic links to other parts of the plant and reduce crane movements to an essential minimum. A cross transfer ladle car will link up to the existing RH vacuum treatment unit. In addition, an ingot casting plant for producing special products will be served via a transverse track.

In future, it is intended to use the ladle furnace to treat as many melts as possible – some 3.5 million tons of crude steel per annum. Its main task will be to heat the melt, achieving a heating rate of 4 °C per minute for a 30-minute period of treatment. Optimum control of the electrodes will be ensured by the Simelt AC electrode control system. The tapping temperature on the LD converter can be reduced by between 40 °C and 60 °C, which will lower the consumption of refractory material in the converter. The ladle furnace will increase the efficiency of the ladle treatment facility, and reduce operating costs. The ladle furnace will also be able handle fine alloying work and blowing operations, which had previously taken place in the conditioning stands. The equipment supplied for this purpose will include two six-track wire feeding machines.

ArcelorMittal Bremen GmbH is a flat steel producer. It employs an integrated blast furnace / converter system to produce high-quality steel grades, primarily for the automotive and construction industries. It also intends to increase the production of tube steel grades in future.
The main reasons for winning this order were Siemens VAI's expertise in the industry and the excellent working relationship during the pre-project phase.

Siemens to modernize plate mill of Handan Steel

Wednesday, 23 Feb 2011
Siemens VAI Metals Technologies has received an order from Handan Iron & Steel Co Ltd Ltd a Chinese steel producer to fit its three meter plate mill in Handan with a new basic and process automation system. After modernization, the mill will produce high quality heavy plate for shipbuilding and pipeline construction.
It is scheduled to be commissioned at the beginning of 2012.

The 3 meter plate mill has been running at Handan Iron & Steel since the 1990s.
Within the scope of the modernization project, Siemens will design and supply core components for a new basic and process automation system to replace the existing heterogeneous automation equipment. The scope of supply also includes the integration of new process models. These include, for example, a multipoint roll gap setup, a temperature and mass flow model and a profile and flatness control. Plan view pattern control will ensure that the plates are orthogonal.

Models for taper and thermo mechanical rolling fulfill the requirements for multi-piece rolling, so that modern types of steel can be produced. A mill pacing function will ensure a high throughput and optimum utilization of the rolling stand. The automation to be implemented at Handan Iron & Steel is based on the Siroll PM Solution concept specially developed for plate rolling mills. Siemens will also be responsible for supervising the installation and commissioning.
A major reason behind winning this order was the good experience Handan had gained from previous projects with Siemens, which include the construction of the two coupled tandem pickling lines and a hot rolling mill.
Handan Iron & Steel Co is a subsidiary of Hebei Iron & Steel Group Co Ltd. It is one of China's leading steelmakers, and produces around 40 million tons per annum. In Handan, in the province of Hebei, the company runs a production complex with a capacity of some twelve million tons of crude steel per annum. Handan has two production lines for producing heavy plate. The three meter plate rolling mill was originally constructed by a German machine manufacturer in the Hattinger steel plant of Ruhrstahl AG, where it ran until 1987, before it was dismantled and transferred to Handan.

Russian steel plants need investments - Siemens VAI

Sunday, 06 Feb 2011
According to Mr Werner Auer, CEO of Austria based plant maker Siemens VAI, Russian steelmakers have made up for the collapse of production in 2009 caused by the worldwide economic crisis.
Mr Auer said "2010 saw an increase in steel production again almost to the level of the record breaking year of 2008 and companies have started again to increase their investment in the expansion and enhancement of their production.”
He went on to say that he has observed an increased demand for new technologies to be used primarily in new plants or in the context of modernization.

Mr Andreas Lemp Siemens VAI manager responsible for systems business in Moscow said "Contrary to many other steel nations, Russia has its own raw materials and energy. This puts Russia in a good position to become a cost leader in production, and also among international competition."

Mr Auer said the expansion of production capacities in Russia is in line with transformation efforts and technological modernization. He said that "This is because Russian steel producers will better utilize their raw material, save on energy costs and fulfill stricter environmental regulations. Russia will also increasingly produce more sophisticated products.”
Mr Auer stated that therefore, existing steel plants need to be modernized and enhanced.(sourced:steelorbis.com)
