ArcelorMittal puts 12 MTPA Orissa steel plant on backburner
ET reported that perturbed over delays in getting necessary approvals and land acquisition issues, global steel giant ArcelorMittal is understood to have put its proposed 12 million tonnes steel plant in Orissa on back burner.
According to company sources, no progress has been made by the company in the state in last one and a half years and at the moment the company is focusing more on its plans for setting up steel units in Karnataka and Jharkhand.
Only 8 gram sabhas meetings out of 15 required for land acquisition in Orissa has been conducted till first half of 2010 and the status remains the same, sources said.
In 2006, ArcelorMittal had signed an MoU with the Orissa government to set up a 12 million tonnes per annum steel plant in four phases at Keonjhar, entailing an investment of INR 50,000 crore. The MoU is due for renewal in December 2011.
When asked whether project in Orissa was stalled, the company's India spokesperson declined to comment.

POSCO war zone - Congress supports anti POSCO brigade
Asking Orissa Government to refrain from forcible land acquisition for POSCO project near Paradip, Congress committed its support to the people unwilling to give their land for the South Korean steel maker.
Congress sent a four member team headed by party's chief spokesman Prof Kailash Acharya to Dhinkia area where about 600 policemen were deployed to acquire land for POSCO project.
Prof Acharya told PTI over phone that "Though chief minister Mr Naveen Patnaik had announced that force won't be used for acquiring land for industries, today's incident proved his false claim.”
Stating that Congress was totally opposed to the use of force for setting up industries, Prof Acharya alleged that people were not consulted before acquiring their betel vines.
He said that "Land acquisition in Nuagaon gram panchayat is a clear case of state sponsored terrorism. No law is followed for acquiring land for POSCO.”
While the district administration of Jagatsinghpur claimed that it acquired 11 betel vines from Gobindpur village, the Congress team alleged that no beneficiary had turned up to receive compensation.
Prof Acharya said that "This indicated that betel vines are acquired without consent of people and by use of force.” (sourced from PTI)

POSCO war Zone - Anti group PPPS warns of blood bath
The anti POSCO movement has decided not to give 'even an inch of land' for the mega steel project in Orissa even as the state government there is gearing itself to start land acquisition over the next two weeks.
POSCO Pratirodh Sangram Samiti chairman Mr Abhaya Sahu said that anti POSCO movement is passing through a very critical stage after Union Minister for Environment and Forest Mr Jayram Ramesh gave clearance for the project.
He said “We have been fighting for the last five and half years. We will not give up the fight. People are ready to fight till the last drop of blood in their body.”
Mr Sahu said that people are facing the government sponsored repression on the behalf of South Korean company adding that whatever conditions that are laid down by Ministry of Environment and Forest for the project are merely an eyewash.
He said "The state government is preparing itself for land acquisition in next two weeks time. But the anti POSCO moment has decided not to give even an inch of land for the project.”

S. Sumatra coal railway to be completed on schedule
Tue, 01 Feb.2011
The Jakarta Post reported that, despite land acquisition problems, state coal mining company PT Bukit Asam is upbeat that the development of a railway track connecting Tanjung Enim and Tanjung Api Api port in South Sumatera will be completed on schedule in 2014.
Bukit Asam president director Sukrisno acknowledged that resistance during the land acquisition processes might affect the progress of the railway’s development, but he claimed that his company had taken all necessary measures to ensure that the project was finished on time, as quoted by The Jakarta Post.
“We’ve cooperated with local administrations and speak heart-to-heart with people living in the region. We believe that solutions will be reached in the near future,” he told House of Representatives Commission VII overseeing energy and mining at a hearing session on Monday.
Sukrisno said that people were afraid of losing sources of income if they moved to other locations prepared by the company and local administrations. To address their concerns, he said that Bukit Asam ensured it would assist people in creating alternative sources of income in their new places of residence.
“We’ll work together with local administrations to build not only their new homes, but also their livelihoods,” Sukrisno said, adding that the relocations would begin in March this year.
The US$1.65 billion (around Rp 15 trillion) railway track would be expected to start operations in 2014, he said. (source:TheJakarta Post)
