FIMI urges Indian government not to impose iron ore export ban

The Federation of Indian Mineral Industries (FIMI) has urged Indian government not to impose a blanket ban on iron ore exports, as it would "affect India's steel industry and result in the closure of captive mines."

FIMI secretary R K Bansal has said that the domestic steel industry has much more iron ore supply than the required volume. A blanket on iron ore export will cause most non-captive mine to close. It is stated that due to mining halt, exploration will also stop preventing further additions to reserves and resources.

FIMI also suggested that steel plants should not be allowed to have captive mines since the domestic iron ore production is already more than the domestic demand and will continue to be so for the next few years.

No plan to ban iron ore exports from India - Mr Sharma

PTI reported that Indian union minister for commerce and industry Mr Anand Sharma ruled out a ban on iron ore exports, saying the surplus mineral must be exported.

Mr Anand said that "A considered view had been taken that the exports of iron ore must continue. India has enough surplus particularly of iron ore fines.”

He added that domestic industry largely uses iron ore lumps, while the country exports mainly iron ore fines.

Mr Sharma said that "Therefore, mined iron ore which is in surplus must be exported.”

The issues had arisen following an apex court order of late last month, banning on all mining activities in Bellary in Karnataka. The apex court in its subsequent hearing later on August 5 partially lifted the ban and allowed only state run NMDC to carry out mining activities in the region with a cap of 1 million tonnes per month. The apex court had also said that iron ore produced from the Bellary region will not be exported.

Mr Sharma said that "This particular intervention by Supreme Court was on a limited context on what was happening, particularly in the state of Karnataka in Bellary, where there was illegal mining of iron ore. Illegal mining is taking place in some other parts of the country as well, but that does not lead to a situation where that iron ore does not get exported. This issue will get suitably resolved.”

New Delhi: The iron ore export ban in Karnataka might be lifted soon after the Supreme Court on Thursday gave the state government a two-week deadline to put in place its mechanism to curb illegal mining.
The state government had in July 2010 banned the export of iron ore after reports of rampant illegal mining in the mineral-rich Bellary-Hospet region emerged.
“Let them export under supervision,” said the bench led by Justice R.V Raveendran.
“Stop illegal mining, but you cannot ban exports forever,” the court said to the government’s counsel.
The state government said Lokayukta’s report named several companies who are contesting the ban in court.
MSPL, the largest private mining company in the region, said it was not named in the Lokayukta’s report and using that as a pretext to ban them was unfair.
The government sought more time from the court saying it was ”doing a complete overhaul” of the laws governing the mining and transportation of ore.
