South Bend, Indiana-based flat-rolled steel coil and steel plate processor Steel Warehouse is considering adding a new coil processing plant in Calvert, Alabama on ThyssenKrupp USA's land near the mill's new flat-rolled steel facility.
According to local news reports, Steel Warehouse would invest $16 million in the project that would have a pickling line to process hot rolled coil for ThyssenKrupp's Calvert mill.
Already, the Mobile County Industrial Development Authority has voted in favor of $1.17 million in sales and non-school property tax abatements to Steel Warehouse for the jobs that the new facility will create.

Olympic Steel posts $1.6 million net loss in Q4 2010

Cleveland, Ohio-based national flat-rolled steel service center Olympic Steel announced Thursday a net loss of $1.6 million for Q4 2010, compared to a $2.6 million net loss in Q4 2009. For the full year 2010, Olympic Steel recorded a net income of $2.1 million, compared to a $61.2 million net loss in 2009.
Tonnage sold increased 31 percent from 194,000 net tons in Q4 2009 to 254,000 net tons last quarter. For the full year 2010, the company sold 969,000 net tons, 34.3 percent higher than the 721,000 net tons sold in 2009.

Flat-rolled steel inventories in Brazil down 3.8 percent
Wednesday, 23 February 2011According to the Brazilian Steel Distributors' Institute (INDA) and the Brazilian Steel Institute (IABr), flat-rolled steel inventories in Brazil totaled 1.157 million metric tons in January, a 3.8 percent decrease from December due to fewer imports into the country.
Flat steel imports fell 42 percent year-on-year last month, to 130,000 metric tons, from the 225,000 metric tons in January 2009. Month-on-hand inventories were about 3.4 months, down 0.9 months from month-on-hand inventories in December.
