JSW Steel shifts UK service centre to Karnataka

Thursday, 05 Jan 2012

Business Standard reported that JSW Steel has shut down its 500,000 tonnes per year capacity in the United Kingdom and shifted the entire machinery to its Vijayanagar steel plant in southern India.

The plant has an annual hot rolled and cold rolled slitter and cut to length facility of 500,000 tonne at the Vijayanagar facility in Bellary district.

Mr Seshagiri Rao joint MD and group CFO of the company told BS that the service centre has now been shifted and commissioned at its upstate Karnataka plant.

The UK company was named JSW Steel Service Centre (UK) Ltd and had three slitting lines and one multi strand blanking line. JSW’s 100% Indian subsidiary, JSW Steel Processing Centres Ltd, bought these assets from the UK company for an undisclosed sum. In the last fiscal, the company processed 490,000 tonne of steel from this service centre. In FY09, the company processed only 304,000 tonne of steel due to the weak UK steel market.

As on date, the JSW Steel has completely exited the UK market, as the service centre was its sole operation in that European country. At present the company owns only the land where it had its service centre.

JSW Steel cuts production by up to 40pct - PTI Report

Wednesday, 03 Aug 2011 | By PTI

PTI reported that JSW Steel today has cut its productions from its Vijayanagar plant in Karnataka's Bellary district by 35% to 40% due to paucity of iron ore.

Mr MVS Seshagiri Rao JMD & CFO told PTI "We have reduced our steel production from Vijayanagar by about 35% to 40% as we don't have much iron ore inventory left."

When asked whether the plant was moving towards shutdown, Mr Rao said "The company has hardly two three days of iron ore left."

But he refused to elaborate.

JSW Steel has 10.3 million tonnes per annum steel making capacity at Vijayanagar in Bellary of Karnataka and it sources about 50% of its iron ore requirements from Bellary, while another 30% is met from Chitradurga district of the state.

Indian iron ore mining mess - Administration seizes iron ore in Bellary

Monday, 01 Aug 2011| By PTI

PTI reported that continuing its crackdown on illegal transport of iron ore after the Supreme Court ordered suspension of mining operations in the Bellary district, the district administration has seized several consignments of iron ore being transported illegally in the state.

On Saturday, the administration seized 49 trucks illegally transporting iron ore at Alighar on the city outskirts. The district collector said the vehicles apparently belong to Bellary Mining Corporation. He said the truck drivers claimed to have obtained the permit for taking out the iron ore on July 30.

On Sunday the administration seized more consignments. Official sources said personnel from the Revenue and Mines and Geology Department seized iron ore being illegally transported in 24 lorries in Sandur taluk, which belonged to Tomatro Mining company. The company was transporting the ore to Janaki Steels.

Another consignment of the company's 3,800 tonnes, being transported in railway wagons was also seized.

Authorities also seized 3,960 tonnes of iron ore, which was being transported from Mysore Minerals in Sandur to Jindal company in railway wagons and lorries.

On July 29, the Supreme Court had ordered immediate suspension of mining and transportation of iron ore from Bellary district. The court passed the order by taking note of the report of its expert panel, Central Empowered Committee, which said most miners in the region were indulging in illegal mining, causing considerable environmental damage.

JSW changes iron ore suppliers

Tue,July 26,2011
By Shubhashish, Business Standard

Mumbai: In the wake of the tussle between the Karnataka government and iron ore miners in Karnataka’s Bellary district, many steelmakers are facing shortage in supply of the raw material. JSW Steel, which operates an 11-million-tonne plant in the region, has secured iron ore supplies from the neighbouring Chitradurga, thereby reducing its dependence on Bellary.

“We are able to meet our requirement of iron ore from Chitradurga in Karnataka,” Vice-Chairman and Managing Director Sajjan Jindal said while addressing the 17th annual general meeting.

He said there were a lot of issues relating to iron ore miners in Bellary but declined to comment on the issue as the case was in the Supreme Court.

Vinod Nowal, director and CEO, JSW Steel, told Business Standard, “We were getting 50 per cent of our iron ore requirements from Bellary which is roughly around 20 million tonnes (mt). We are sourcing an additional 10 mt from Chitradurga.”

Nowal said of the 50 per cent iron ore that used to come from Bellary, the company is sourcing around 30 per cent from Chitradurga. The remaining 20 per cent is still being sourced from companies in Bellary with which JSW Steel has long-term contracts.

The company sources 20 per cent of iron ore from its captive resources. It gets another 30 per cent of the raw material through purchase agreements with state-run NMDC and Mysore Minerals Ltd. The remaining 50 per cent was being sourced from miners in the Bellary area.

“As on today, we are comfortable with our sourcing,” he said.

JSW Steel has also commissioned its benefication plant which has reduced its dependence on high grade of iron ore, thereby bringing the costs down. The company said that in 2009-10, 80 per cent of its total iron ore was of high grade, which has come down to just 30 per cent in 2010-11.

For the current financial year, the company will continue to source low-grade iron ore to meet its entire requirement, resulting in cost savings.

Talking about the production growth for the current year, Jindal said the company planned to produce nine million tonne of steel, which 40 per cent more from the previous year. The company has also commissioned a 3.2-mt blast furnace, taking its total installed capacity to 11 mt.

It said that the company has tied up for additional iron ore sources to feed the 3.2 million tonne steel melting capacity that has become operational in the first quarter of this year.
