Japan’s crude steel output falls 3.8 percent in H1 FY 2011-12

Sat, 22 October 2011

On October 20, the Japan Iron and Steel Federation (JISF) released the latest data regarding crude steel production in Japan. Accordingly, in the first half of the fiscal year 2011-12 (April-September) Japan's crude steel production amounted to 53.31 million metric tons, decreasing by 3.8 percent year on year.

The JISF stated that the main factor responsible for the output reduction was weakened market demand resulting from the devastating earthquake and tsunami which hit the country on March 11 this year.

Japan July crude steel output almost flat

Fri Aug 19, 2011

* Output falls 0.8 pct from June on daily basis
* Output drops 1.2 pct yr/yr for fifth-consecutive fall
* Higher auto output offers some hope, but yen clouds export outlook

TOKYO, Aug 19 (Reuters) - Japan's crude steel output was almost flat in July from the previous month, as the strong yen hurt steel exports while carmakers ramped up production following a post-quake slump.

Crude steel output totaled 9.11 million tonnes in July, down 0.8 percent on a daily production basis from June after adjustment for the number of days in the month, the Japan Iron and Steel Federation said on Friday.

From a year earlier, output fell 1.2 percent for a fifth consecutive year-on-year fall. That was an improvement, however, from a 5 percent drop in June, a 7 percent slide in May and a 6 percent drop in April, after the devastating earthquake on March 11.

"We expect steel demand to further increase in the coming months thanks to higher output at carmakers, but the strong yen is worrying," an industry official said.

Exports of Japanese steel products plunged 9.3 percent from a year earlier to 3.5 million tonnes in June as the yen hovered near a record high against the U.S. dollar. That was a fourth consecutive year-on-year decline.

Japan's five blast furnace steelmakers, including the world's No.4 steelmaker, Nippon Steel Corp , and fifth-ranked JFE Steel Corp , plan to produce 21.35 million tonnes in the July-September third quarter, 7 percent more than in the second quarter, as they target growing demand from carmakers.

Second-quarter output of 19.89 million tonnes was the lowest in two years due to the impact of the earthquake, which damaged Sumitomo Metal Industries Ltd's plant on the northeast coast.

Japan Feb crude steel output +5.7 pct yr/yr,March fall seen

Fri Mar 18, 2011 5:42am GMT

* February output up 5.7 pct yr/yr
* Output down 7.5 pct from Jan, when Sumitomo came back
* Analysts expect further output fall in March

TOKYO, March 18 (Reuters) - Japan's crude steel output rose 5.7 percent in February from a year earlier to 8.93 million tonnes, the Japan Iron and Steel Federation said on Friday.

Output, which is not seasonally-adjusted, declined 7.5 percent from January.

January's strong month-to-month output increase was due to a production boost by Sumitomo Metal Industries Ltd, Japan's No.3 steel mill, whose production was affected by troubles at its blast furnace in November and December.

Analysts expect Japan's crude steel output for March to drop further following the disruption to operations after the disastrous earthquake that hit eastern Japan on March 11.

Japan's big two Nippon Steel Corp and JFE Holdings Inc have resumed operations of blast furnaces idled after the quake since Sunday, but government-imposed power cuts are expected to sharply reduce their production in March.(Reporting by Yuko Inoue; Editing by Ed Lane,sourced Reuters)

Japanese crude steel out put in 2010 to highest in 43 years

Friday, 21 Jan 2011

Japanese crude steel output in 2010 jumped by 25% to nearly 110 million tonnes, the biggest rise in 43 years.

Crude steel output in December totalled 9.17 million tonnes, up 2.5%YoY for a 14th consecutive YoY rise. From the previous month, December output rose 2.1% MoM due in part to an extra day compared with November.

Officials at the Japan Iron and Steel Federation traced the rebound to greater demand from Japanese carmakers, whose sales received a boost from the subsidy buying program for environmentally friendly cars.

They also said exports to overseas markets, such as China and Southeastern Asian countries, remained robust.
