Avonlea Minerals update on Ondjou Iron Ore project

Tuesday, 22 Nov 2011

Avonlea Minerals has increased the JORC Resource at the Ondjou Iron Ore Project, Northern Namibia, by 33% to 693 million tonnes iron at a grade of 23.7%.

The increase is based on a strike length extension to the established area of mineralization established in the project’s maiden JORC Resource, identified by diamond drilling and metallurgical testing.

Importantly, the Resource remains open along strike and down dip, with a number of new targets still to be tested over more than 100 kilometres of strike. Avonlea has licenses in application to the north and south of Ondjou.

Guildford Coal confirms maiden coking coal resource in Mongolia

Saturday, 19 Nov 2011

Guildford Coal has confirmed an initial JORC Resource of 63.1 million tonnes of coal with coking potential at its South Gobi project in Mongolia. The maiden resource comprises 38.2 million tonnes in the Indicated category and 24.9 million tonnes in the Inferred category.

A boost to the South Gobi project, which comprises five exploration licenses, is that it is located approximately 60 kilometers from the Chinese border station town of Ceke, where coal from Mongolia is currently transported through to China. The maiden resource underpins the potential start up of a 1 to 2 million tonnes per annum open cut mining operation.

Guildford Coal has lodged mining license applications for EL13780X and EL5262X and both are expected to be granted prior to the end of 2011.

The company is also in the process of completing Scoping Studies for the start up operation with the goal of beginning mining from the North Pit by the June quarter of 2012.

Drilling will continue on the other key tenements in the South Gobi Project to define a JORC Resource for the Central, West and East Pits.

Bobab JORC resource in Tete region of Mozambique rises by 100 million tonnes

Wednesday, 02 Nov 2011

Baobab Resources has added more than 100 million tonnes to the JORC compliant resource at its iron ore project in the Tete region of Mozambique. It rises to 267 million tonnes from 160 million tonnes following the completion of resource estimates on the Ruoni North and Chitongue Grande.

This is phenomenal progress for a company which started 2011 with a JORC resource of 48 million tonnes and puts it tantalizingly close to its 300 million tonne target which it hopes to achieve by the year-end.

Mr Ben James Managing director said "Ten months into the year and the global inventory is now sitting at more than a quarter of a billion tonnes with the high grade Ruoni South resource still to come in and Tenge beginning to flex its muscle.

He said that "This would not have been accomplished without the unswerving dedication of our technical team in Mozambique. The scoping study is progressing at pace and is assessing development routes that will capitalize on the project's unique proximity to abundant coal and water resources and some of the lowest tariff hydro-power in Africa.”

He added that "Importantly these are the critical complementary resources for establishing a fully integrated iron and steel industry."

The Tete project splits into two distinct parts the Singore area and directly to the north of this, the Massamba Group. Massamba can then be split into a number of target areas Chitongue Grande, Chimbala, the Tenge-Ruoni prospect and finally the rather blandly named South Zone.

Ruoni North inferred resource is 93 million tonnes with a head grade of 35% iron ore (Fe) and an indicative concentrate grade of 58% Fe, 0.8% vanadium oxide and 13% titanium dioxide. Chitongue Grande’s inferred resource base increased from 48 million tonnes to 61 million with a head grade of 25% Fe and an average concentrate grade of 64%.

Baobab said drilling at Ruoni South, meanwhile has defined broad packages of mineralization delivering some of the best quality concentrate grades in the Massamba Group. These included a consistently high grade of vanadium. Independent consultant Coffey Mining is on schedule to deliver a resource estimate by the end of November.

The company revealed that the high mass recoveries recorded at the Ruoni North deposit means that it will yield more than double the concentrate per tonne of ore processed than its South Zone or Chitongue Grande counterparts. Drilling is progressing steadily at Tenge, outlining substantial zones of strong mineralization. First analytical results are expected during December.

Finally the group reiterated that the compilation of a scoping study on the project is at an advanced stage with preliminary results expected in the latter half of November. The plan in the next three-and-a-half to four years is to create an operation that will initially export magnetite and an increasingly more profitable ilmenite concentrate. It will then move into the production of pig iron using well established rotary hearth furnace technology successfully employed in South Africa and New Zealand.

The capital costs of such a project are substantial, at anywhere between USD 500 million to USD 750 million but off-set by the staggering revenue potential of pig iron, magnetite and ilmenite concentrate production. When compared to some of the iron ore projects planned for West Africa that requires a huge investment in infrastructure, Baobab Tete project looks much more affordable.

Universal Coal continues to progress Berenice Cygnus coking coal project

Saturday, 08 Oct 2011

Universal Coal continues to progress the Berenice Cygnus coking coal project in South Africa forward at speed with the company appointing DRA Mining Ltd to undertake a Concept Study.

Mr Tony Harwood chairman of Universal Coal said “We are delighted to have the strong technical DRA team to assist Universal in determining the quality and size of our future coking coal operation at Berenice-Cygnus.”

This study comes hot on the heels of the announcement earlier in the week that the JORC Resource has been increased to 1.325 billion tonnes at the project. The upgrade was achieved after the company received outstanding slim diameter analytical data from infill holes which were completed during the first phase drilling program.

Another significant outcome to the upgrade is the 56% increase in the coal Indicated to Measured Resource categories over the previous estimate, which was delivered mid-year.

Berenice now comprises
1. 7.9 million tonnes in the Measured category
2. 394.5 million tonnes in the Indicated category
3. 922 million tonnes in the Inferred category

A Feasibility Study is forecast to commence in 2012.

Hodges Resources takes option on 1.4Bt Botswana coal prospect

Monday, March 07, 2011

Hodges Resources (ASX: HDG) has optioned the Moruple South Coal prospect, a strategic coal prospect with a target resource of 1.4 billion tonnes in Botswana.

The Morupule South Coal Prospect is adjacent to the operational Morupule mine and Colliery which is the only operational coal fired power plant in Botswana.

Given the upward share price trajectory of another Botswana coal explorer, African Energy Resources (ASX: AFR), with its Sese Coal Project in eastern Botswana, the deal by Hodges to option a coal prospect with a target resource of 1.4 billion tonnes is interesting, indeed.

Under the terms of the agreement, Hodges can initially earn 75% by completing the payment of US$500,000 cash on execution of the agreement and spending US$3,000,000 over two years, with a requirement to spend the first US$1,000,000 within the first year.

On completion of the terms above the companies will incorporate a special propriety company in Botswana that will hold the permit and form a joint venture company.

Hodges can then exercise its option to acquire an additional 24% in the JV through payment of US$0.10 per tonne of all JORC classified Measured and Indicated Resources calculated at the end of the initial farm‐in agreement (two years).

On initiating this payment Hodges must solely fund an additional US$2,000,000 of exploration costs over a two year period and on completion pay SNDP $0.08 per tonne of additional JORC classified Measured and Indicated Resources from an updated report.

Hodges has the exclusive right, until 2nd May 2011, to conduct due diligence prior to entering into the binding agreement.

Located within the eastern central district of Botswana, the Moruple South Coal prospect joint venture has significant mineable coal seams within the area supported by work completed by the current owner and the neighboring companies and a preliminary report undertaken by GEMECS.

Importantly the project areas have had minimal exploration and coal quality analytical work.

Botswana has extensive unexploited coal resources estimated to be in the order of 212 billion tonnes, making it one of the most coal rich countries in Africa.

Botswana is located within southern Africa and has a stable multi‐party democracy and is considered to have a medium to low political risk, similar to Namibia.
