Kilo Goldmine finds high grade iron ore in Congo

Friday, 27 Jan 2012

Canadian junior miner Kilo Goldmines Ltd said it found high grade iron ore at the Asonga Prospect in the Republic of Congo, sending its shares up 14%

The company said Rio Tinto, its joint venture partner for Asonga, drilled five holes in the mine and found 73.5 meters of iron ore containing 66.6% iron.

Kilo said the drill results indicated the area may contain direct shipping iron ore a high grade ore variety that requires less processing and is therefore cheaper to mine.

Alderon Iron Ore project in northeastern Canada advancing

Saturday, 12 Nov 2011

It is reported that an iron ore project in northeastern Canada whose proponent is calling "the next Consolidated Thompson," has taken an important step forward.

Alderon Iron Ore Corp has begun filing material to start the federal and provincial environmental assessment process. The application would allow Alderon to double future annual production at its Kami Project in Quebec-Labrador to 16 million tonnes of iron ore concentrate annually.

Alderon's plan is to ship the material to the port of Sept Îles for export to Asia via common rail carrier. Powerlines running from Churchill Falls hydroelectric power station are located 15 kilometres from the Kami property. A preliminary economic assessment released in September envisions an 8 million tonne per year open cast mine operation with a minelife of 15.3 years. Production is slated to start in 2015.

Beadell Resources inks maiden iron resource in Brazil

Friday, 02 Sep 2011

Beadell Resources has achieved a better than expected maiden JORC itabirite iron ore resource estimate of 209.1 million tonnes at 36.1% iron from the Tap Norte Banded Iron Formation in Brazil. The estimate was conducted by independent consultant SRK and includes Measured and Indicated Resources of 75.4 million tonnes at 37.3% Fe.

Potential extensions from Tap Sul and Tap Leste areas alone are estimated to contain an additional 120 million tonnes to 180 million tonnes of itabirite iron ore, which are currently being aggressively drilled. This maiden iron ore resource is the culmination of a major drilling and resampling program completed over the last 15 months.

Mr Peter Bowler MD of Beadell said that “This is an outstanding maiden iron ore resource which will grow significantly over the coming months. We are in discussions with Anglo Ferrous in relation to these iron ore resources on our Mining Concession to either continue on with negotiations centred around a Joint Operating Agreement whereby Anglo pay for iron ore extracted out of our gold pits or, our preferred outcome, to go it alone if the parties are unable to reach agreement on the terms of such a Joint Operating Agreement in respect of Beadell’s Mining Concession."

The company will now commence a detailed Scoping Study which will include a beneficiation plant and all associated logistics.

Beadell is bullish that the outcome of negotiations will either materially improve the economics of the gold project or, alternatively, enable the company to proceed with a substantial iron ore business on a standalone basis.

Innu protests against iron ore exploration project by Cap Ex Ventures

Monday, 22 Aug 2011

It is reported that one of the largest Innu communities in Quebec in eastern Canada is embroiled in a row with an iron ore mining company.

The company, Cap Ex Ventures, is exploring for iron ore in an area known as the Labradar Trough, a rich seam of minerals that stretches for hundreds of miles along the provincial border between Quebec and Labrador, the heart of Innu territory.

The long history of mining in this area has already taken a huge toll on the rich hunting grounds, with many of the rivers dammed for hydro power to feed the smelters needed to turn the ore into iron and steel. A railway was built into the region in the 1950s to transport the ore.

One of the largest Innu communities that uses this area for hunting, gathering and trapping is the Innu band known as Uashat mak Mani Utenam (also known as Sept Iles). They do not want Cap Ex Ventures to enter their hunting grounds until the company has formally committed to allow full environmental monitoring of their operations, but the company has gone ahead anyway.

Mr Armand MacKenzie, a spokesman for the Innu, said that "We expressed serious environmental, social and cultural concerns to the company: they’re showing a disrespectful attitude. We are open to constructive dialogue, but any exploration activity or mining activity on our lands, that affects our natural resources, needs our consent, that' a fundamental principle."

In a statement, Cap Ex Ventures said that "The company remains committed to discussions with the Innu of Sept Iles. The Company will continue to inform the Innu of Sept Iles of its activities."

IOC considers doubling iron ore production capacity

Thursday, 18 August 2011

The Iron Ore Mining Company of Canada, a subsidiary of global mining giant Rio Tinto, reported Tuesday that it is in the midst of a study to pursue expanding its mining and infrastructure assets in Labrador City, Newfoundland and Labrador and Sept Iles, Quebec.

The study will evaluate options to initially increase production to 50 million metric tons per year by 2016. The IOC is already in the process of increasing iron ore capacity to 26 million metric tons per year by 2013. The integrated study will consider multiple alternatives for the expansion, which may include new concentrators, mining pits and related mine, rail, stock handling, and port infrastructure.

"The timing is right for us to look at a project of this magnitude. With the strong market demand for iron ore, the abundance of IOC's resources and the success of our ongoing concentrate expansion program, it is clear that we need to look at how we further grow the business," commented Zoë Yujnovich, President and CEO of the Iron Ore Mining Company of Canada.
